One of the key questions newcomers to computing ask is whether they should buy a laptop or a desktop machine. There is no clear cut answer for all people, but there are some good guidelines. Another key question many new computer users face is whether or not to connect their computers by a network. Networks can be very useful when it comes to sharing information such as documents and contacts, and if a number of employees need to collaborate using the same data then a network can be vital.
Where documents are concerned networks allow sharing across a whole organisation. This means that standard copies of texts can be made readily available, and revisions and updates shared immediately and easily – it is both cheaper and faster to put a new version of a document onto the company's network than it is to print, photocopy and distribute it by hand.
However networking is not essential. You may decide to start using computers without a network and spend some time thinking about whether one might be useful in the future.
