The main reason for this myth is that people who have used dial-up products extensively are initially surprised by the call charges they incur. With broadband products there is a single price per month, starting from £29.99. With minimal installation fees and various offers, this makes the cost of broadband fixed so you can budget accordingly. And unlike dial-up, you can share the costs between several staff both in the office and at home, saving you hundreds of pounds per year.
With over 71% of the UK covered and over 1.7m users, there's a good chance you can get DSL Broadband already. If your exchange is not yet enabled you need to register your interest with BT or a local supplier and it could be enabled within six to ten weeks. If you can't wait that long, there are satellite broadband products available now.
An easy shot but not true. The UK Government is committed to broadband deployment and the E-envoy's office has established punishing targets for availability in the next few years. There is no legal requirement for BT to enable its exchanges, as this is a costly business, especially in lightly populated areas. Yet the company has already established over 70% availability and established registration and campaign services to gauge demand. BT is currently enabling a new exchange every day.
Simply not true. Occasionally a web site has server problems and appears to download very slowly. This is entirely due to the site host, not your connection to the Internet. Broadband speeds at around 500Kbps are around 10 times quicker than dial-up, and services up to 2Mbps, around 40 times faster than dial-up.
If you've been using a dial-up connection, it's not surprising you've missed out on the video content, file sharing, business application and video-conferencing services all reliant on broadband connections. The Internet and the Web is a rich experience, so long as you aren't reliant on a poor connection.
This is a myth from some capped services, particularly early satellite systems which allowed for fast download but limited uploads. Very few products are limited in this.
Encryption systems and services which validate users on a network are available with Internet security packs to keep undesirables off your network.
Not true. The popular Airport Base Stations from Apple and many cheaply available hubs and routers can connect PCs and Macs with or without wires.
