Name: Nick Adderley Business: Addviser Type of business: Home-based marketing company
Nick Adderley is a director for Addviser; a marketing company that he runs from his home in Bradford-upon-Avon. Working from home he relies on being able to communicate with clients via the internet and could not survive without it.
Frustrated at his previous internet connection, Nick was delighted when he heard his small town was one of the first places in Britain to get access to Broadband.
“Prior to it I used BT standard internet, but could simply not operate at a file receiving speed of less than 40, which was the real speed, not the quoted 56,” says Nick.
The changeover process was surprisingly easy and it wasn’t long before Nick was up to speed with broadband:
“Contacting BT was easy, and once it was up, using it was very smooth and untroubled. The actual modem set up is easy. When I did have and a problem the local BT engineer was fantastic.”
And Nick wasn’t disappointed with benefits that broadband brought:
“I can now operate effectively from home, at the same speeds as connecting to a clients’ office network,” he says. “No longer do I have to ask for files of 1 Meg and above to be mailed on disc to me, I can send, within reason, anything I want. I can lookup and research proposals massively faster than before.
So convinced by the changes that he’s seen Nick now believes it’s impossible to run a business from home without broadband.
“I believe it’s near on impossible to work from home if you produce presentations and proposals, to any scale, without broadband. It transforms the speed of researching backgrounds etc via the web, as download waiting is virtually a thing of the past.”
When asked to sum up the benefits of broadband, Nick exclaims: “Speed, speed, speed -and getting to movie previews from the USA on my PC!”
