Experts have been left confused after a survey found entrepreneurs believe the UK is a bad place to do business – except when it’s a ‘great place’.
A third of entrepreneurs disagreed that Britain is a good place to do business, while almost the same number said it’s fine, despite the current downturn.
The poll, by the Orange SMS Business Jury, found that entrepreneurs agreed on what makes a successful business, with more than two fifths saying a good reputation, just over a quarter citing happy customers, and a fifth saying high profits.
More than half of entrepreneurs said a healthy economy is the most important key to success in the future, while more than 20% said less red tape would help them achieve success, and less than one in 10 said they plan to invest in better training for their staff.
Martin Lyne, director of small and medium enterprise at Orange Business Jury, said despite the confusion, the survey was a ‘great insight’ into the mindset of Britain’s businesses.
“It’s hugely encouraging to see the value placed on good reputation and customer satisfaction. There is also a great resolve and fighting spirit among the owners and managers of Britain’s smaller businesses.
“With the hope of a stronger economy, we can look to put the great back into Britain as a place for running a business,” he said.
